This test helps to evaluate
whether or not a dog has the instinct required
for it to be trained to work on livestock.
The HIT proposed by the French Kennel Council
is limited to dogs between the age of 6 and
18 months old. The judge first checks whether
or not the dog has a stable character and
is obedient. If this is the case, he then
asks the owner to approach the yard with his
dog on its leash for a first encounter with
the livestock. The dog is then let loose to
see if it is interested in the herd of cattle
or sheep. After that the judge asks the owner
to enter the yard with the dog back on its
leash to check that its always interested
or to stimulate its interest if it hasn't
as yet shown any. The dog must do so without
any fear or aggression to successfully pass
the test.
Good Behaviour Cerficate
In France dogs must pass
a Good Behaviour Certificate before being
allowed to compete in work or fun sporting
competitions organised by the French Kennel
Council. The test is fairly simple. The dog
has to show that he can behave in the presence
of other dogs, can be handled by strangers,
isn't frightened of strange noises and is
capable of obeying basic orders. Dogs can
pass this certificate as of 12 months old.
